a tag + an announcement

Hello again!

Earlier this week I promised a tag and an announcement, to celebrate the end of 2016 and the beginning of 2017, and, lo and behold, I have returned with those!

First off, the tag-

I’m doing “The Smashing & Dashing Characters 2016 Character Awards” tag!!!

*much excitement and cheering*

clapping

Cait from Paperfury invented this tag a little while ago, and technically tagged me (she tagged her followers), and since I wanted a fun tag to take, here we are now!

the-smashing-dashing-characters-of-2016-awards-booktag

This tag involves giving several awards to characters in books that I have read in 2016. The books don’t have to be published in 2016 (thank goodness for that!).

I’m adding one more rule: You must thank the blogger who tagged you. Thus-

Thank you, Cait! You’re really awesome.

Now…

MOST RELATABLE CHARACTER

David from Dickens’ David Copperfield. He was so much like a real person, and I understood what he was doing and why he was doing it.

MOST PURE AND PRECIOUS ANIMAL COMPANION

Er… none of the books I read this year actually had *good* animal companions (unless I chose someone from Animal Farm, which I most certainly do not wish to do for this category). So I’ll just go with the purest and most precious companion I can think of. And that would be…

dobby

Dobby from the Harry Potter series. He’s sweet, and of course he’s pure and precious. So he wins this one. (Look, I’m breaking the rules already!)

And no, I’m not calling him an animal, so please be gentle in the comments.

🙂

FIERCEST FIGHTER

The title characters from The Song of Roland and BeowulfThe Song of Roland, if you haven’t heard of it, is a lay about Charlemagne’s warrior nephew. And Beowulf is about Beowulf, an Anglo-Saxon warrior. They’re both pretty awesome fighters, and I can’t really choose which is better , so I’ll just pick both and they can fight over who is better.

MOST AMAZING SIDEKICK

Any sidekick from the Harry Potter series. Because I can’t pick just one.

ONE YOU’RE SURPRISED YOU LOVED

The title character from The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. I really wasn’t expecting to even like Tom at all, but he was actually cute and lovable, and reminded me quite a lot of my 12-year-old brother. So I did love him.

BEST SASSMASTER

Sir Eanrin the Bard from the Tales of Goldstone Wood Series. Yes, a sassy poet who was every bit as awesome as that description implies.

BEST ANTI-HERO AND MORALLY GREY GRAPE

Can I choose Javert from Les Miz? Please let me, because he is one of my favorite grey characters/grapes of all time, and perhaps one of my favorite characters in general. Yes, Les Miz was a re-read this year, but I’m still counting it. So there.

BEST WORST VILLAIN TO HATE

Rhett Butler from Gone With the Wind. I’m counting him as a villain, because he was abominable and I hated him more than I can ever remember hating a character.

TRULY ASTOUNDING WORST Y.A. PARENTS

Duke Leto Atreides and Jessica, parents of Paul Atreides, from Dune by Frank Herbert. They were really, truly awful parents.

TRULY ASTOUNDING BEST Y.A. PARENTS

You know, the most depressing thing about this tag is that I could think of terrible fictional parents within a few seconds, but I cannot for the life of me think of actually really, astoundingly good parents from any books that I read this year.

Except Marmee from my re-read of Little Women. She’s good, so we’ll go with that.

TOOT TOOT BEST SHIP OF THEM ALL

I’ve actually never shipped anyone, so…

I know, I’m very weird.

I’ve never really come across two characters that I think should be together that aren’t already, so I’ll just skip over this one?

THE MOST IN NEED OF PROTECTION

Lily from Skies of Dripping Gold by Hannah Heath. Or maybe not. She was sick and weak physically, but she was really smart, sweet, and strong in spirit.

But let’s move on, anyhow, because *sniff* that book was so sad and I don’t want to cry again.

MOST BORING AS A BARNACLE

Princess Marina from Pericles, Prince of Tyre by William Shakespeare. Without a doubt. Just thinking about her frustrates me. She doesn’t really *do* anything, except supposedly be sweet. Simply read this-

Marina: I never spake bad word, nor did ill turn

To any living creature: believe me, la,

I never kill’d a mouse, nor hurt a fly:

I trod upon a worm against my will,

But I wept for it. How have I offended?

yzma

I’m sorry, Shakespeare, but that’s just horrible.

And what kind of character marries the man who tried to seduce her just a minute before? Seriously. Shakespeare describes her as good, innocent, clever, and extremely wise, but the only things she actually does in the entire play/book is cry about everything and then marry this not-exactly-great guy.

So that’s why she won the “Boring as a Barnacle”.

No more about Marina, though, because it only makes me frustrated.

BEST LITTLE ROYAL

Prince Ferdinand William Otto from Long Live the King! by Mary Roberts Rhinehart. “Otto” is the nine-year-old crown prince of a fictional European nation, and he is completely adorable. I mean, his kingdom is on the verge of a terrible war, his grandfather the king is dying, and all he wants is a dog.

VERY SURPRISED YOU’RE STILL ALIVE

Scarlett O’Hara from Gone With the Wind. Seriously, I can’t believe that someone didn’t just kill her either by accident during the war or from frustration with her already.

BEST AT HORRIBLE DECISION MAKING

Nick from The Great Gatsby. Or just about anyone from that book.

CUTEST DORK

This one was incredibly difficult, but I finally chose one- Foxbrush from Anne Elizabeth Stengl’s Tales of Goldstone Wood. Foxbrush is… I’m not even sure how to describe him. I don’t really know why exactly I like him, except that he’s adorable and a dork.

CLEVEREST LITTLE HELLION

Iago from Othello. If someone can convince a man that his wife is cheating on him with his most trusted friend, and then manage to get that man to murder his wife and the friend, he must be really smart.

MOST IN NEED OF A NAP

Harry Potter from (you guessed it) Harry Potter. I know, I’ve chosen waaaay too many HP characters in this tag, but the characters were the very best part of the books, and the books themselves were some of my favorites of the year. Also, Harry really needs a nap after hunting Horcruxes and almost dying a million times.

WANT TO READ MORE ABOUT YOU

I’ll just say King Arthur from Le Morte d’Arthur and a bunch of other legendarium-related books because I plan to read a lot more about him this year.

Well, that is the end of the tag!

Looking back over this list, I’m realizing that I haven’t really read that many newer books, but have stuck mostly with classics. Sorry about that, if you aren’t a fan of older books. Hopefully that will change next year, as this year I may have finally exhausted my supply of older books, and then I won’t be the only person blogging who reads almost entirely books written over a hundred years ago.

Now about the tagging- let me just go totally cliche and tag everyone who is doing a year-end post and/or wishes to take the tag.

One thing left- the announcement!

During the new year, I’m going to do something new on my other blog, Learned in the Lore.

I’m going to start a monthly post, focusing on music. I figured since I share so many songs there, I might as well just do a monthly blog, sharing 5 or so of my favorite finds of that month. These posts will be published the last week of every month.

Hmm, let me see- do I have anything else? No?

Okay, we’re done here.

I probably have way too many thumbs-up gifs

Happy 2017!

Which awards would you give to which characters? What do you think of my new blog schedule?
